According to the National Association of Realtors, roughly 28% of home buyers are single individuals. While buying a home as a single person can be intimidating, it is not as difficult as many people might think, and some cities make it easier for single homeowners.  

In a recent article, Insurify’s data scientists reviewed and rated a number of cities for being friendly for single homeowners. They looked at the average cost of a one-bedroom home, as well as the average cost of home insurance. Insurify also looked at the number of arts and entertainment venues, the cost of living in each city and unemployment rates, while also rating transit options.

10 – Burlington, Vermont

While Burlington isn’t the cheapest city on the Insurify list for the cost of a house or even the cost of living,  it does have a very low unemployment rate of 3.1% as well as excellent entertainment options.

St. Louis has the second lowest housing costs as well as the lowest cost of living in Insurify’s top 10 best cities for single homeowners. Low housing costs, combined with an excellent public transit system and walkable downtown make St. Louis an excellent choice for single homeowners.

  • Average cost of home insurance: $119 / mo.

Pittsburgh came out on top with its super low cost of living, very affordable housing and cheap homeowners insurance rates. While all of the cost savings is excellent, Pittsburgh also features plenty of mass transit options, a growing restaurant and craft brewery scene as well as plenty of art galleries, theaters and concert venues.
