Over 1,000 of those non-renewals are in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gethomeinsurancequotes.com\/north-carolina\/dare-county-home-insurance.php\">Dare County, NC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NCDOI claims that more the half of the non-renewals are based on the \u201churricane hazard assessment tool,\u201d while the balance of the policies are being non-renewed and homeowners are being referred to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gethomeinsurancequotes.com\/blog\/north-carolina-joint-underwriters-and-wind-pool-map-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association\u2019s Beach Plan<\/a> which is the state backed insurer of last resort in North Carolina.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nationwide informed the NCDOI that they had decided to \u201cassess and rebalance its portfolio based on risk.\u201d They also said that they considered climate severity, weather-related losses and the reinsurance market when making their decision. Unfortunately, their departure from the market leaves many of their policyholders scrambling to find coverage.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt may be a little harder to find coverage now,\u201d said Willo Kelly, CEO of the Outer Banks Association of Realtors in a recent Wavy.com article.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cAll of a sudden, you know they are going to drop you and you have to find coverage elsewhere and it\u2019s much more expensive.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outer Banks residents already face expensive premiums and often have to purchase both homeowners insurance which protects them from fire liability, as well as a separate rider or policy for wind and flood insurance. Inland residents usually only need a standard homeowners policy to protect their home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Homeowners in the Outer Banks face shocking increases in their premiums. \u201cI went to a closing and thought the insurance cost would be similar to the current owner\u2019s, which is about $3,500,\u201d Kelly said in the Wavy.com article.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cThey were shocked to find the new coverage total would be $20,000. That\u2019s a $20,000 annual coverage premium,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While insurance premiums may finally be reflecting the true risk coastal locations present, skyrocketing insurance premiums are having a massive impact on homeowners in risky locations. \u201cIt\u2019s the ability to maintain your mortgage,\u201d Kelly said in the Wavy.com article. \u201cThey have to come up with a couple extra hundred dollars a month, $500 a month, $1,000 a month. It\u2019s going to affect some people hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outerbanksrealtors.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Outer Banks Association of Realtors<\/a> is partnering with Dare County to hold \u201cA Community Conversation on Property Insurance\u201d from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 at the Dare County Commissioners meeting room according to the Wavy.com article.
