According to Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, homeowners will have to continue waiting for lower Florida homeowner insurance rates<\/a>. As premiums continue to soar due to insurers pulling out of the Florida market, local legislators say it will be years before premiums start to decline.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with House Speaker Paul Renner that aired Sunday on WJXT\u2019s \u201cThis Week in Jacksonville,\u201d Renner said, \u201cIt took years to get in the ditch and it will take a couple of years to get out of it.\u201d In the interview Renner talked about legislative changes that will supposedly end the \u201cwild, wild west of litigation practices\u201d driven by \u201cunscrupulous contractors\u201d that has resulted in the most expensive homeowner premiums in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd that had caused a lot of our insurers to go out of business and leave the state billions and billions of loss and dollars of losses. And so people looked at the state of Florida from the insurance market and said, stay away,\u201d Renner said in the interview.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Renner acknowledged in the interview that the \u201creforms have not yet hit the consumer,\u201d who is beset by \u201cprice increases\u201d due to claims stemming from Hurricanes Ian and Nicole last year. These \u201care really creating some pressure on the back end of these reforms that we haven\u2019t got out from under yet, but we will get out from under it,\u201d Renner claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Speaker claimed in the interview that \u201cnew insurers are coming into the market.\u201d New insurance companies are necessary as more and more homeowners have found their only option to be a policy from Citizens Insurance, which is the insurer of last resort in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd for those that don\u2019t know, it\u2019s supposed to be a last resort. If you can\u2019t get anywhere else, you go to this government run Citizen\u2019s program. And we have a real big number of folks that are on Citizens. We\u2019ve got to depopulate that,\u201d said Renner.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Renner is just the latest state official to tell Floridians that finding insurance in the Florida market may be challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gov. Ron DeSantis said, \u201cI think they\u2019re going to wait through this hurricane season and then I think they\u2019re going to be willing to deploy more capital to Florida,\u201d in a recent radio interview. \u201cSo, knock on wood, we won\u2019t have a big storm this summer. Then I think you\u2019re going to start to see companies see an advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not all republican politicians are so optimistic about Florida\u2019s insurance market, particularly since Farmers Insurance recently pulled out of the Florida market altogether. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott recently said the recent departure of Farmers Insurance was a \u201cwake-up call\u201d to the state. \u201cStop and think about it, here\u2019s what happens for a company like Farmers to leave,\u201d Scott said during a press conference. \u201cThey\u2019ve spent years and decades to build up that clientele and just walk away. So, this is a wake-up call to the state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers was not the only insurer to leave the state<\/a>, seven insurers went insolvent in the last year. Scott urged Florida legislators to speak with companies leaving the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat you have to do is you have to sit down with the companies,\u201d Scott said. \u201cState Farm had left the state before I became Governor. I sat down with State Farm and said, \u2018What are your issues?\u2019 It always comes down to fraud. It always comes down to, there\u2019s fraud going on in the market and guess what? If there\u2019s fraud you pay for it because insurance is a shared cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, I think what the state has to do is it\u2019s got to sit down with Farmers, State Farm, all these companies and say, \u2018What are the problems?\u2019 Then what legislation do you need to get rid of it?\u201d Scott continued.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
